When God Opens Doors: A New Chapter for Carlson Homestead Quilting

Big News: A New Chapter for Carlson Homestead Quilting

I’ve gone back and forth on how—and when—to share this.

If I’m being completely honest… part of me has been holding my breath up until the very end, afraid that somehow the purchase might still fall through.

So I’ve been a little quiet about it. But God's specialty is so often in bringing us to places we could never have imagined for ourselves.

Now I can finally say it:

Carlson Homestead Quilting now has a brick-and-mortar home—and I am the new owner of Nuts & Bolts Fabric in Edgemont, South Dakota.

Where Carlson Homestead Quilting Began

Carlson Homestead Quilting started as a hobby… on my kitchen counter.

A heat press.
A (very) fancy printer.
And an idea I had no idea had so much potential.

I started creating quilt squares one at a time, just to see what would happen.

And it grew—much faster than I expected.

Before long, I had to outsource my fabric printing just to keep up. What started as something small turned into something real… something that kept growing beyond what I could manage on my own.

When we moved to South Dakota, I set up a workspace in the attic of our home. It felt like a big step.

But it didn’t take long before I outgrew that space too.

If you’ve followed along for a while, you know this hasn’t all been easy.

One of the biggest challenges has been simply trying to stay in stock.

Demand has been there—but I haven’t always had the space, the systems, or the help to keep up with it.

I’ve spent a lot of time feeling like I was constantly trying to catch up… always running out of designs, always trying to restock, always feeling a step behind.

And that’s been discouraging.

But even in that, God was providing.

Recently, I’ve been able to bring in help to cut fabric, and we are working hard to get Carlson Homestead Quilting’s shelves filled back up—so that instead of constantly running out, we can finally stay in stock and serve you well.

The First Quilt Shop I Walked Into

Nuts & Bolts was the very first quilt shop I visited after moving to South Dakota.

And I walked in during one of the hardest seasons of my business.

I was discouraged. Tired. Questioning everything.

And then I met Earleene.

Her kindness, her encouragement, and her willingness to support what I was building… it lifted my spirits in a way I still can’t fully explain.

Nuts & Bolts became the very first store to carry Carlson Homestead Quilting quilt squares.

She believed in what I was doing before most people even knew it existed.

And I’ve never forgotten that.

When God Opens a Door

So when I found out that Earleene was planning to retire and was looking for someone to take over the shop…

It didn’t feel like a coincidence.

It felt like an answer.

An answer to the need for space.
An answer to the need for growth.
An answer to prayers I hadn’t even fully put into words yet.

This opportunity means:

  • The space to grow Carlson Homestead Quilting
  • Room for inventory, systems, and help
  • A brick-and-mortar home
  • And the honor of continuing a shop that has been part of this community for years

A Shop With History

Nuts & Bolts has a story all its own.

It began in 2005 as a half quilt shop, half motorcycle repair business—“Nuts” for the mechanic and “Bolts” for the quilter.

And somehow… quilting took over.

From its early days in a historic bank building…
to its current home in a 1919 building that once housed Reichardt Chevrolet…

This shop has been built with care, and it has deep roots in this community.

And now, I have the privilege of continuing that story.

Not Replacing—Continuing

This isn’t about replacing Nuts & Bolts.

The name isn’t going anywhere.
The heart of the shop isn’t going anywhere.

This is about stewarding what’s already been built—and trusting God as we grow into what He has next.

I love this community.

I love the quilting world—the creativity, the generosity, the way people support each other.

I love the Black Hills.

And I truly love Edgemont. It’s a small town, but it carries something special—a spirit of community that you don’t find just anywhere.

This shop is part of that.

And stepping into it has been one of the biggest challenges of my life…

…but also one of the clearest reminders of God’s faithfulness.
